Shadow magic begins and ends in exchange. In order to obtain power, you must offer something of yourself. Your soul, your fate, your life… any of these is appropriate. But there are those who offer more than they can pay… and who take more than they can handle. When this happens, the Shadowfell balances the scales. These individuals become darklings, having traded their selves, their identities, everything they are, and in return are granted the power of true darkness.

Play a Darkling if you want …

  • to be a swift, eerie creature of darkness.
  • to be a creature with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
  • to be a member of a race that favors the assassin, duskblade, and warlock classes.

PHYSICAL QUALITIES
Darklings are long and slender creatures, narrow-faced, with spindly arms and narrow torsos. The darkling's body is mounted on three spindly legs, each ending in a sharp talon, two in front and one behind all spaced evenly around the body. Their arms end in equally slender three-clawed hands, featuring two dextrous fingers and a thumb. A darkling's flesh is smooth and supple, always in dark shades, among which the deepest of blues and purples and shimmering ebon black are most common.

A darkling's face has no recognizeable human features. Their faces are dominated by a cluster of five eyes, each varying between shades of red and yellow often on the same creature. Each darkling also has a mane of long quills that starts at the crown of its head and runs halfway down its spine.

Darklings have no visible mouths and, indeed, have little use for them anyway. They need not food, nor breath, nor sleep, and to question how a darkling can communicate is to invite maddening conjecture. However, a darkling does require six hours of rest to gain the benefits of an extended rest, as time is required for them to recover out of the light. They have no gender and do not reproduce, but tend to spring forth from the darkness of the Shadowfell almost at random.

PLAYING A DARKLING
Darklings are shadows given form, the darkness of the Shadowfell bound to the essence of mortals who overstep their bounds. They retain nothing of their former lives, save for, in some cases, vestiges of the ambition or desperation that brought them to the point of no return. With no remnant of any humanity it may have possessed, a darkling is among the most vicious of fighters… it's kill or be killed, for them, and a battle doesn't end until the enemy is too broken to move anymore. This pragmatism can often be mistaken for sadism, and in younger darklings the two are often not mutually exclusive.

Darklings, as a rule, exist as individuals. While a group of younger darklings may bunch together for protection, as the years pass the group dissolves as each member searches out the meaning to its own existence. Some of these may even attach themselves to wanderers out of curiosity, perhaps even offering their own dark insights in exchange for tidbits from the world of light.
